Dmitry,
Many of those constructs, well.. all of them actually, were from before
there were pseudo variables or avps. It's a lot of legacy constructs. There
are probably proper PVs for most of them now.

I agree with you, however, that it seems a bit chaotic on which variables
are $variables and which variables are var:iables and which variables are
"variables". :)
