  xlog: Fix a series of issues

    * properly report xlog() success/failure at script level
    * differentiate between xlog errors (-1) and HEP errors (-2)
    * do not cancel logging because of HEP errors
    * remove bogus error log
    * hint at 'xlog_buf_size' if the print string is too large
